The World of Jinn

Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani said: “The Messenger of Allaah said: ‘The jinn are of three types: a types that has wings, and they fly through the air; a type that looks like snakes and dogs; and a type that stops for a rest then resumes its journey.” [Shaykh al-Albaani said in al-Mishkaat (2/1206, no. 4148): al-Tahhaawi and Abu’l-Shaykh reported it with a saheeh isnaad]

The unseen Angels and Jinn

Angels are beings made of light and are programmed to do Gods work without question. They dont have free will. Angels were created before mankind. Their nature is to serve God, thats it. They do not die nor can they fall into evil.

Mankind are beings made of dust and have free will to choose good and evil, etc. We all know. Our nature is to create and build through our intellect and faculties. We live, procreate and die with a limited life span.

Jinn are beings made of smokeless fire and they were created with free will like humans to do good or evil. The Jinn were created before mankind. They live in a “parallel” universe among humans and their nature is to be mischievous. They are not as intelligent as humans and have no desire to create like humans. They live among dirty and dark places. Some of them are good and some choose evil, like humans. Like humans they too have a life span. They live, procreate and die. Some are Muslims, Jews, Christians, Pagans, etc.

Of the Jinn there is a ‘select’ group. This is the group that rebelled against God at the creation of Adam, led by ‘Iblis’ or Satan. He rebelled because God told him to bow and serve Adam while he is on earth. Satan got annoyed and said that he will not bow and serve Adam because Adam was inferior to him. He said, ‘I am made of fire and fire can destroy clay’. So, 1/3 of the Jinn followed satan in this belief and rebellion of jealousy and arrogance. God was about to throw in into hell when Satan asked him to give him a chance to prove that he is correct and that mankind will also rebel against God. God then granted his wish and gave him until the End of Time to tempt and test mankind. That means that this ‘select’ group cannot die like the other jinn. They live until the day of judgment.

The Characteristics of Jinn

Jinn are conscious beings charged with Divine obligations

The word jinn literally means something hidden or veiled from sight. As mentioned earlier, jinns are a species of invisible beings. A short Qur’anic chapter is named for them, and in it we learn that a band of jinn listened to Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, and some became believers:

Say: “It has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn gave ear, and they said: ‘We have heard a wonderful Qur’an, which guides to righteousness, so we believe in it and we shall not join (in belief and worship) any (gods) with our Lord. And (we believe) that He-exalted be the glory of our Lord-has taken neither wife nor son …. Among us there are righteous folk and among us there are far from that. We are sects having different rules.,” (72:1-2, 11)

From this, we understand that jinn are conscious beings charged with Divine obligations. Recent discoveries in biology make it clear that God created beings particular to each realm in the universe. Jinn might have been created while the Earth was still a body of some sort of fire. They were created before Adam and Eve, and were responsible for cultivating and improving the world. Although God later superseded them with us, He did not exempt them from religious obligations.

The Qur’an states that jinn are created from smokeless fire (55:15). In another verse, it clarifies that this fire is scorching and penetrates as deep as the inner part of the body (15:27).

Beware of the Jewish Jinn

It should not be surprising that some entrepreneurial spiritualists have been able to profit from the Middle Eastern readiness to succumb to conspiracy thinking. “Jinn theory” concerns the characteristics of minor supernatural beings, like elves or sprites, a legacy from the Middle East’s pre-Muslim polytheistic past. It is a traditional part of Middle Eastern folklore, and since the intifada erupted on December 9, 1987, contending with Jinns has become a growing business in Gaza. Sheikh Abu Khaled, an exorcist, said the number of possessed Muslims has more than tripled: “I suspect that Jewish magicians send Jinns to us here in Gaza. In fact most of my patients are possessed with Jewish Jinns.: Both Jewish and Christian Jinns are reported to be black in color, but the Jewish ones are distinguished by the horns growing from their heads.

Can we have contact with Jinn?

In the Quran, there are some signs about jinn and devils that they can be taken under control be used as servants. The best example for it is Hazrat Sulaiman (Solomon) (pbuh) about whom a story is told in the Quran. Islamic scholars had various explanations about the issue.

The following is stated about the issue in Risale-i Nur Collection, 20th word in summary:
“The verses saying that Solomon (pbuh) took the control of wicked souls prevented their wickedness and made them do good deeds: “Then we subjected the wind to his power, it made his command to run gently wherever he desired, and the Satans, every builder and diver, and others linked together in chains. And we had subjected to him many of the Satans who dived into the seas for him, and performed other tasks besides, and we kept watch over all of them.” It means the jinn, the most conscious resident of the Earth after human beings, can be servants for human beings. We can have contact with them. Devils can be obliged to give up enmity and serve. God Almighty made them serve his slave (Solomon), who obeys God’s commands

Gulen says the following about the issue:

Having contact with jinn has some ways and requires a guide and being an expert. If ways, principles and guides are not used, there will be risks of getting into trouble. If those people are unaware about the spiritual world and do not know where to stand, they may be attacked by wicked souls; they can get under the control of them and turn out to be toys in their hands. The jinn sometimes lead those people into pride and arrogance and sometimes try to scare and threaten them and make them talk on their behalf and make them serve for themselves. In the 20th century, Gulam Ahmad Qadiyani became a victim of those wicked jinn. He wanted to struggle for Islam in the way of Fakirism against Yogizm but was attacked by wicked souls and became one of their toys. Wicked souls, at first, made him accept that he is a mujaddid and then Mahdi and later made him believe that he was Jesus. In the end, he said “God got into my body, was seen in my body”. Wicked souls can easily have contact with wicked people and can cause them to go crazy. (1)

So, we can understand that such events can happen and jinn can be contacted by experts and they can be made do something, but it is extremely dangerous to regard it as fun and become busy with it without having enough knowledge.

Jangan Menafikan Kewujudan Jin

Mempercayai kewujudan jin bukanlah suatu kepercayaan tahyul.

(Surah al-Dzariyaat, ayat 56)

Masjid Al-Jinn

This mosque, near the graveyard of Jannat al-Mu’allaa, is built in the place where the Jinn gathered to listen to recitations of the Holy Qur’an. This is also known as Masjid Bai’et.

(Jinn are invisible beings created from fire. Good or evil, they are held accountable for their actions for all eternity.)
